The Jeep Cherokee was manufactured with optional power windows, which use a motor-driven window regulator to raise and lower the glass. Damage to this motor, or any break in the electricity required to run it, can cause a window failure. The average backyard mechanic can repair a power window in about an hour.
Instructions
1. Check the fuses at the driver's kick panel for burned-out filaments. Replace any that are blown and try the window again. If all other windows work except this one, the issue is probably the motor.
2. Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise and placing it aside.
3. Remove the door switches by prying up one side with a screwdriver and pulling them out of the door panel. Disconnect the wiring harness by pulling the adapter plug apart at the switch. Place the switch assembly aside.
4. Remove the door panel by turning the screw inside the interior door handle counterclockwise. Turn the arm rest bolts counterclockwise, and set all hardware aside.
5. Pull the door from the plastic pop rivets holding it to the metal by starting at one corner and tugging firmly on the panel's edge. Move along one side until all of the rivets are disengaged. The plastic rivets can become brittle with age and may require replacement.
6. Disconnect the motor from the wiring harness by pulling the adapter plug apart. Turn the motor mount bolts counterclockwise, then pull the motor from the window regulator gears.
7. Replace the motor with a new unit by placing it into the window regulator gears and turning the mount bolts clockwise. Reconnect the wiring harness by pressing the plugs together.
8. Replace the door panel by pressing it firmly against the door metal, engaging all of the pop rivets. Turn the arm rest bolts and interior door handle screws clockwise until they are snug.
9. Replace the switch assembly by pushing the adapter plugs together and pressing it into the door panel until it is seated.
10. Reconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt clockwise.
