Change A Nokia E71 From Dutch To English

Cell phone manufacturers have to anticipate that their phones will move around from one country to another. A phone sold in Sweden may end up in France, for example; or a traveler might stumble upon a great deal for a cell in Amsterdam. Whatever the circumstances that brought you to owning a Dutch-programmed Nokia E71, take comfort. The phone is preprogrammed with a dozen languages and switching between them is easy.

Instructions

1. Press and hold the power key on the top of the E71 to turn it on. Then press the "Home" button to ensure that the Nokia phone is at its root menu. Press the center button to open the menu and then move up to select "Instrumenten" (Tools) and press down on the center button. Then select "Instell" (Settings) and press the center button again. In English, these options would appear as "Menu," "Tools," "Settings."

2. Use the center button to navigate through the menu until you see "Taal" -- or "Langauge" -- then tap the center button. You'll see a list of all of the available languages for your phone (though in Dutch). Look for "Engels" or "English" and tap the center button to change the phone language to English. This will change all of the menu text, but might not change the text input language.

3. Press the "Home" key again and then access the menus again, now in English. Click "Tools" and then "Settings" and scroll down until you see "Language." You can now see the various sub-menus, including "Writing language" and "Predictive text." Select each of these in turn and change the language to English. When you compose emails or type a text message, the phone will use its English dictionary to predict the words you are typing.

4. Press and hold the function key (in the bottom left of the keyboard) and the space button when composing a message to change the predictive text language on the fly. This is especially helpful for European users who might text in several languages but prefer the phone menus in English. You don't need to go through the menus every time you want to change the input language and dictionary on the phone.
