Fix A Nokia 6235i Stuck In Headset Mode

While it is a simpler device than its more modern cousins, the Nokia 6235I still effectively performs basic functions like making and receiving calls and sending text messages. However, given its age, the device is prone to eventual malfunction. One common issue users experience is when the devices insists a headset is plugged in even when one is not, and refuses to play audio through the handsets speaker. Thankfully there are ways to resolve the issue that may help you avoid purchasing a new phone as a solution.

Instructions

1. Power the Nokia 6235I off and then back on. This may serve to clear the headset mode if it is being caused by a very minor software glitch. To do this, hold down the red "End Call" button until the handset powers down. Hold the key in once more to power the Nokia back up. Ascertain whether the handset is still in headset mode.

2. Plug and unplug a headset into the device. Sometimes the physical act of making contact with an actual headset can rectify the software issue causing the problem. Gently plug a headset into the phone and make a call. Once the audio is audible through the headset, gently unplug it. Assess whether the audio is now coming through handset correctly. If not, more advanced troubleshooting is required.

3. Perform a master reset. From the home screen, press the "Menu" key followed by "Settings." Select "Restore factory settings" and wait for the phone to power off and then back one. This reset will revert all settings back to factory standard, effectively resolving any software glitches causing the stuck headset mode. If the icon is still present after the reset, something physically may be wrong with the device.

4. Clean the headset port with compressed air. Sometimes dirt or lint can find its way into the headset port. When such material makes contact with the pins inside the port, it can falsely cause the phone to think a headset is plugged in. Hold the long, thin nozzle of the compressed air can a couple inches from the hole and initiate the air stream. Give it two or three bursts and then assess if the icon has disappeared.

5. Contact your carrier for repair or replacement. If the handset is still in headset mode, it is likely due to a hardware failure beyond your control.
