Record Phone Calls With Windows Vista

Most phones come with a speaker-phone feature, which is all you need to record a call for free on Windows Vista.

Phone manufacturers--cell phone manufacturers in particular--do not make recording phone calls easy. Ask them record calls and they will steer you toward microphones, jacks and modems than can cost hundreds of dollars. Sometimes, though, the best way is the easiest. By simply recording directly to Windows Vista, you bypass all the expensive technology and receive a surprisingly good recording of your phone call, without the expense or hassle.

Instructions

1. Turn on your computer. If you have an external microphone, make sure it is plugged in.

2. Click "Start" in the lower left corner of your screen, select "All Programs" and "Accessories." Select "Sound Recorder."

3. Make your phone call. Turn your phone on speaker phone as the number is dialing and place it six to 12 inches from your computer's microphone. While the process varies by phone, there is usually a button that says "speaker" or a speaker icon when you make a call. On some phones, you can turn on speaker phone before you make the call under "Sound Settings" or something similar in your phone's "Settings" or "Tools" menu.

4. Click the large red "Record" button in the Sound Recorder software.

5. When the call ends, hit "Stop" in the Sound Recorder software.

6. Save your finished recording by selecting "Save" under the "File" menu. Navigate to the folder where you wish to save the recording, give the file a name and click "Save." The program will automatically add a ".wav" file extension.
