Samsung phones offered by the Optus Network are "locked" when you first purchase the phone. This "locking" process makes it impossible to use a different provider's SIM card to make or receive calls. However, since this is an aftermarket addition programmed by the companies, users may unlock the phone for use on any network by entering a special unlock code. A few carriers may share the code with certain customers. But for the most part, the customer must locate the code for themselves. Dozens of online companies offer unlock codes for a fee.
Instructions
1. Look on the box your Samsung came in for the IMEI number. This unique identifying code may also be obtained by dialing *#06# on the handset.
2. Contact the Optus customer service line and request the unlock code. Tell them you wish to use the mobile on holiday overseas. Call back a few times to see if different representatives are more willing to help.
3. Search for the Samsung model in an online database service that specializes in unlock codes.
4. Purchase the code online. The company will require the IMEI to generate the unlock code. The code arrives via email. The waiting period may take as long as a few weeks for certain models.
5. Follow the unlocking directions provided by the company that issues the code. Each model uses a different method of properly entering the unlock code.
