Make Phone Calls Using Your Computer & Mic

Make Phone Calls Using Your Computer & Mic

The Internet transformed communications with its ability to send and receive text, images, audio and video to any computer in the world with the appropriate connection. You can chat with text through instant messaging, interact in virtual worlds with three-dimensional worlds and converse by voice in audio chat rooms. You can even place calls to regular phones without having a phone line as long as you have the right equipment.

Instructions

1. Plug the headset into your computer either through a USB port or through the headphone and mic ports. Though you can also use a separate headphone and mic, the headset combines both into one package and keeps the mic close to your mouth so you sound better during the call.

2. Download, install and run a calling program such as Skype. You will need to sign up for an account.

Such programs typically let you place calls to other users of the same program for free. Calls to landlines or cell phones, however, require a small fee, which typically is the same whether you're calling a local phone or one in another country.

3. Follow the setup instructions to test your headphones, microphone and phoning abilities. When you finish defining preferences, the main program window appears.

4. Click "Call Phones" or similar to display a phone keypad.

5. Enter the area code and phone number to call by clicking on the keypad or by clicking the cursor into the number box and typing in the number. (Do not enter "1" for long-distance calls.) When you have entered the complete number, press the "Enter" key or click "Call" to dial the number and place the phone call.
