How Shorten The Time Of An Mp3 File

Time compressing or shortening an MP3 file's length or run time can be done with free software tools.

You can shorten an MP3's run time for free with your computer and a free audio program. Simply use the program's audio effects to change the tempo of your MP3 file. Then once shortened, your file will fit into your video sequence or whatever application for which you're using the shortened file.

Instructions

1. Download and install Audacity software.

2. Open the program by clicking its icon on the desktop. Once it's open, load your MP3 into the program by clicking the "File" menu and selecting "Open."

3. Browse your computer's hard drive to locate the MP3 file you need to shrink. Select it in the window, and click "Open."

4. Press "Crtl+A" on your keyboard to select the entire file. Alternatively, you can click "Edit" and "Select...All." Click the "Effect" menu, and then the "Change Tempo" effect.

5. Slide the tempo change slider to the right to shorten your file. As you slide it to the right you'll notice the "Length" display change as it shortens the length of your file. If you shorten your file too much, it will sound unnatural. Stick to a length reduction of around 25 to 35 percent for best results. Experiment with the length until you achieve a desired length that also yields a natural-sounding result.
