Send the Internet over a USB connection.
Both cable and DSL modems have two types of installations: either USB or Ethernet. Both types of connections function well, but there are times when you may prefer to use the USB option. For instance, if your computer does not have an Ethernet connection or when the Ethernet card in the computer malfunctions, then sending the Internet through the USB cable connection becomes a viable alternative.
Instructions
1. Attach the Internet modem to either the coaxial cable or the telephone connection coming from the wall. The connection you use will depend on whether it is a cable or DSL modem. Follow the modem instructional diagram that comes with the packaging to connect it appropriately. If using a DSL modem, place the phone filters that come with the modem on all the other phone connections in the house. This will eliminate any noise that comes through on the DSL Internet line. Connect the modem to the electrical outlet and allow it to set up.
2. Turn on your computer and insert the CD that came with the modem. This CD contains the USB drives to make the Internet work through the USB cable. Wait for the instructional CD to start, or go to "Start," "Computer" and click twice on the CD-Rom Drive to start the installation. Follow the on-screen installation instructions and click "USB Installation" if prompted.
3. Download and save the drives to a USB memory drive if you do not have the modem manufacturer CD. Locate the modem manufacturer and model located on a label on the modem device. Write this number down, and on a computer with Internet access, navigate to the manufacturer's website. Click on "Support, "Downloads," or a similar command. Type in the model number in the appropriate box and download the correct drivers from the list of options that appears. Choose to save the program on the memory stick when given the option of running or saving the program. Disconnect the USB memory stick and connect it to the computer where you want the drives installed. Locate the file on the memory stick and click twice to start the installation. Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
4. Connect one end of the USB cable to the modem in the appropriate USB port. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB port on your computer when prompted by the installation CD. Wait for the CD to finish installing and click "Finish" if prompted. Otherwise, the program will finish and close on its own.
5. Restart the computer and check to make sure the appropriate indicator lights are lit on the modem. Verify this with your installation diagram that came with the modem. The Internet indicator light should be flashing. If it isn't, contact your Internet provider.
6. Open your web browser and surf on the Internet as you normally do.
