Motorola designed the Motorola C118 to work on the Global System for Mobile, or GSM, Communications network, which means it functions with a Subscriber Identity Module card. The portability of a SIM card allows you to transfer your information between phones, but not between carriers. To use your Motorola C118 with another carrier, you must unlock the phone using a special code. AT&T and T-Mobile provide a free code after a specific period of active service. You may also purchase a code from an online vendor such as Mobile Unlock Solutions or The Travel Insider.
Instructions
1. Enter "*#06#" into your phone to obtain the International Mobile Equipment Identity number, also called an IMEI number. You must provide the IMEI to the carrier or vendor to obtain a code. The IMEI number is another method carriers use to identify you on their network. It differs from a SIM card in that a SIM card transmits user information such as rate plan and cell phone number. An IMEI number identifies your phone. Every Moto C118 has a different IMEI number.
2. Turn off your phone, remove the battery cover and take out your battery. Gently slide your current SIM card from the SIM card slot.
3. Insert a SIM card from another network. Using your current SIM card will render the unlock invalid.
4. Replace the battery and battery cover. Turn on your Moto C118.
5. Enter the unlock code you purchased or obtained from your carrier when "Enter Special Code" appears on your phone screen. Your phone is now unlocked.
