Skype allows you to make calls and send text messages where there is no cell signal but Wi-Fi is available
Installing Skype on a Samsung Omnia phone running Windows Mobile 6.1 is useful for consumers who regularly make Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls, or those who want to take advantage of the affordable long-distance rates offered through Skype. Additionally, the calling services available through Skype are available even where there is no cellular signal, as the Skype connection can be completed using the Omnia's Wi-Fi function. The Skype installer for Windows phones can be transferred to the device from a PC or downloaded directly to the Omnia.
Instructions
1. Download Skype. Visit the Skype for Windows Phones download page, linked below, and make sure that your Omnia is connected to the computer via USB or you have a high-speed 3G mobile connection if you are downloading directly to the phone.
2. Run the installer. If you are installing from a computer to your phone via USB, double click the file you downloaded from the Skype page. Follow all prompts to transfer the current version of Skype to your Omnia. If you downloaded the installer directly to your Samsung Omnia and need to install it, find the folder where the installer was downloaded, and click on the Skype installation file.
3. Launch Skype. The first time you load Skype on your Omnia, it may take some time to load. You will be asked for your Skype username and password or, if you do not yet have one, you will be asked to create one. By default, a new Skype account can be used to make free Skype-to-Skype voice calls.
4. Setup other features. In addition to voice calls, Skype on your Windows Mobile Omnia can also be used to call land-line phones and send text messages. While this is of little use in places where there is a high-speed cell signal, you can also connect to Skype via a Wi-Fi network if you are roaming or have a poor cell signal. The rates charged by Skype for international calls and text messaging are much lower than those charged by cellular carriers. So, whether you need to make international calls or are traveling abroad yourself, connecting to Skype via Wi-Fi to place calls and send text messages can save you significant roaming charges. Remember that these features do cost money, and they require a credit card to be connected to your account.
