Voice-over-IP (VOIP) technology allows you to make phone calls using your Internet connection, saving you money on long-distance and international phone calls. However, VOIP also has certain disadvantages. For example, the audio quality of your conversations may be lower than on a normal mobile or land line. Also, some VOIP services require you to leave your PC turned on at all times if you wish to be able to receive incoming calls.
Instructions
1. Check your broadband connection to make sure that your bandwidth is sufficient to allow VOIP. Usually, a 1 Mbps connection should be sufficient, but you might want to contact your Internet service provider if you are unsure about the specifications of your connection. Some VOIP providers also allow you to test their services for free, allowing you to check whether your connection can handle voice-over-IP communications.
2. Subscribe to a VOIP provider such as Skype, Comcast or Vonage. Usually, you pay no subscription or setup fees when subscribing to a VOIP service.
3. Buy phone call credits. Most VOIP providers use a credit system that allows you to load your account with a preset amount of money. Use those credits to make phone calls or send text messages and faxes.
4. Use the software from your VOIP provider to make and receive phone calls, send text messages or send faxes. Each VOIP company develops its own program, and functionalities may differ. Usually, making a phone call using such a program requires you to type in the phone number you want to call and select the "Call" button. The program will then attempt to connect you to that number.
