Like most other mobile phones, the Nokia 6500 can be unlocked. When unlocked, the phone is no longer restricted to its original service provider, so you can keep the phone should you switch to a new company. In order to unlock the Nokia 6500, you must obtain an unlock code. For many mobile phones, you must call the manufacturer or your phone service provider to get the code, but it's readily available online at no cost for the Nokia 6500.
Instructions
1. Type "*#06#" on the phone's number pad to get its IMEI number. This number is needed in order to get the unlock code.
2. Open your computer's Web browser and type in the URL for Unlock Nokia Free (see References). Hit "Return" to load the page.
3. Type in your phone's IMEI number in the designated box on the Website. Do not enter any slashes when you type the number.
4. Choose your country and mobile phone service provider from the drop-down list.
5. Click on "Get Nokia DCT4 Unlock Codes" to get the code. The code will be listed on the next page that loads.
6. Turn off your phone, remove the SIM card and turn your phone on again.
7. Enter the unlock code at the main screen when the phone loads. You will get a confirmation once the phone is unlocked.
