The Nokia 6270 is a feature phone in a candy-bar slider format released in 2005. It uses the Global Standard for Mobile Communications network technology and features a Web browser. It uses the General Packet Radio Service and Enhanced GPRS networks for data transmission. Both networks use identical settings, but you must enter them manually if you didn't buy the phone from the carrier.
GPRS History
When you insert the SIM card into your Nokia 6270, the phone has all of the information it requires to send information over the cellular carrier's GSM network. The GSM standard was developed when voice and text messaging were the only services available, so the bandwidth of the GSM network is extremely limited. The maximum transmission rate is limited to 22.8 kilobits per second. Carriers use a variety of separate data networks for services that require faster transmission speeds. The GPRS network was the first standard developed specifically for transmitting data on GSM carriers.
Obtaining GPRS Settings
The GPRS settings are specific to each carrier. You need the access point name, user name, password, proxy address and port number, the authentication type and the URL of the carrier's GPRS homepage. Most GSM carriers list the settings in the support section of the company's website. If you cannot find the settings on the Web page, use the carrier's online support chat. If they do not offer this service, contact the company's technical support department by phone. As a last resort, check on websites devoted to unlocking cellular phones. The settings are the same across all GPRS phones on the same carrier.
Connection Settings
Most GSM phones have the GPRS settings split up into two separate screens, but the 6270 uses one screen called Active Access Point. The option is located several levels deep in the Settings screen. Open the Connectivity menu, choose Packet Data and select Packet Data Settings. The phone will ask if you want to create a new access point. Enter the carrier's GPRS settings. Once you save the settings, open the Web option off the main screen and choose the access point you created.
Potential Problems
If you purchased your Nokia 6270 directly from the cellular carrier, the settings are already installed. Some carriers hide the data account menu options to prevent customers from accidentally changing or erasing the settings and breaking their phone data connectivity. If the options are missing, you need to access the hidden menu through a combination of key presses or by dialing a specific number. For some carriers, you may need to load a different version of the 6270's operating system using a computer, data cable and special software.
