An unlocked Motorola V170 has a few advantages. You can travel internationally without worrying about high roaming charges. Your phone will function on virtually any GSM network because you are not tied to a specific network. Your provider may unlock your phone, but there is no law that states they have to assist you. Some companies like T-Mobile will unlock your phone if you have an account in good standing for at least 90 days. If not, you must purchase an unlock code online. Once you obtain an unlock code, you can free your phone in a few steps.
Instructions
1. Turn off your phone and slide the battery cover outward and up until it detaches from the phone. Remove your battery and slide your old SIM card from the SIM card slot located in the battery chamber.
2. Contact your current mobile provider to inquire about an unlock code for your Motorola V170. If your provider cannot provide you with an unlock code, you may purchase a code online from Mobile Unlock Solutions or The Travel Insider. (See Resources.)
3. Insert a SIM card from another carrier into the SIM card slot. Replace the battery and battery cover. The phone will display "Enter Special Code."
4. Input your unlock code.
