There are two ways to update the firmware--software embedded in the read-only memory chips--on your Nokia N95 RM-17 cell phone. First, connect the phone a computer and update the firmware via the Nokia Software Updater application. Or, Nokia support says that if a phone is supported with "high-use or unrestricted Internet/data usage" through your service provider, you may update the phone's firmware directly from the phone. Updating the N95 RM-17's firmware to the latest version often improves the performance of the phone and gives you access to new features.

Update the N95 RM-17 Using the Nokia Software Updater
1. Visit Nokia's "Device Software Update" Web page. Click the "Nokia Software Updater" download link and saved the file to a directory on the computer's hard drive.
2. Go to the directory location where you just saved the Nokia Software Updater setup file. Double-click on the file to launch the Nokia Software Updater installation wizard. Follow the wizard's prompts to install the Nokia Software Updater application onto the computer.
3. Use the UBS data cable to connect the phone to the computer via the USB ports on each device. The USB data cable is included with the phone's package at purchase. If you lost yours see the "Store"link in the Resources.
4. Turn on the phone.
5. Open the phone's Menu display. The Menu button is located on the left side of the Left Arrow key.
6. Select "Tools" from the menu. Select "Connectivity." Select "USB." Set the USB mode to "PC Suite."
7. Open the Nokia Software Updater application just installed to the computer.
8. Follow the software's prompts to update the N95 RM-17's firmware.

9. Turn on the phone.
10. Dial *#0000#. A menu screen should appear. Select "Options."
11. Select "Check for updates." If an update is available, you'll be given the option to install it on the phone.
12. Follow the on screen prompts to update the phone's firmware.
