BlackBerry smartphones come in either a GSM or a CDMA version, depending on the type of technology the mobile carrier uses. The biggest difference between a GSM BlackBerry and a CDMA BlackBerry is that GSM phone use SIM cards to connect to the mobile network. Depending on your mobile carrier, there is a SIM subsidy lock on your BlackBerry to prevent you from using another mobile carrier's SIM cards. If you want to remove that SIM subsidy lock, your mobile carrier will often provide the SIM unlock code for free.
Instructions
1. Dial *#06# on your BlackBerry phone. Write down the IMEI number that appears on the screen. Contact your mobile service provider to request your SIM unlock code. Give them all the information they ask for, including the IMEI number and your e-mail address.
2. Turn off the BlackBerry phone when you receive the SIM unlock code from your mobile provider. Remove the battery, battery panel and the current SIM card from the back of the phone. Insert the SIM card from your new mobile network. Replace the battery and battery panel on the phone.
3. Turn on the BlackBerry phone. Click through the SIM card error message. Enter the SIM unlock code on the next page. Press the "Enter" key to unlock the phone.
