Tell If The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool Is Running

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps identify and remove infections by specific, prevalent malware. After the tool checks and removes any detected malware, it creates and displays an on-screen report, then saves the report on the hard drive. Microsoft releases an update for the tool on the second Tuesday of every month. You can determine if the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool is running by checking the list of processes for "mrt.exe."

Instructions

1. Press "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" simultaneously. Click "Start Task Manager" on the menu that appears.

2. Click the "Processes" tab to display a list of running system processes. Click the "Image Name" column header to sort the list of processes alphabetically.

3. Scroll through the list of processes and look for a process named "mrt.exe" with the description "Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool." If you find "mrt.exe," the tool is running. If no "mrt.exe" process appears, the tool is not running.
