Install new firmware on the Nokia E51 phone to repair problems or to update the device. Nokia offers new firmware and software updates for the phone periodically. These updates can be installed using a PC or via the handset. Before installing any new firmware, it is important to back up all important files on your phone. Many updates will not erase your current files, but as a safety precaution you should back up all data.

Update Via PC
1. Back up your Nokia E51 phone. Download and install "Nokia PC Suite" on the computer. Launch the Nokia PC Suite and connect the Nokia E51 to the computer with its USB cable. Select "Backup" in the software application. Select the "Backup" button, and choose each content type you want to back up. Click "Next" to start the backup process. All backup files are stored in the default or selected folder.
2. Download the "Nokia Software Updater" software from the NokiaUSA website and allow the software to install on the computer. Launch the Nokia Software Updater on the computer.
3. Connect the Nokia E51 to the computer using its USB cable. The Nokia Software Updater will detect your connected phone and automatically find all firmware updates for the device.
4. Select "Yes" to install all updates and follow any additional on-screen prompts.
5. Launch "Nokia PC Suite" and select the "Backup" application. Choose the "Restore" button. Select the files you want to restore on the phone from the list of backup files, and select "Next." The software will restore the contents.
Update Via Nokia E51
6. Back up your Nokia E51 phone. Download and install "Nokia PC Suite" on the computer. Launch the Nokia PC Suite and connect the Nokia E51 to the computer with its USB cable. Select "Backup" in the software application. Select the "Backup" button, and choose each content type you want to back up. Click "Next" to start the backup process. All backup files are stored in the default or selected folder.
7. Disconnect the Nokia E51 from the computer, and turn on the phone.
8. Type *#0000# into the phone, or select "Device Manager" from the phone's menu.
9. Select "Options" and click "Check for Updates." The device will search for any firmware updates. Follow the on-screen prompts to install any updates.
10. Connect the Nokia E51 to the computer with its USB cable. Launch "Nokia PC Suite" and select the "Backup" application. Choose the "Restore" button. Select the files you want to restore on the phone from the list of backup files, and select "Next." The software will restore the contents.
