Unlock Your Tmobile Cell Phone

T-Mobile handset? You need a code.

T-Mobile is one of the largest GSM networks in the United States and Europe. GSM networks provide handsets that work by using SIM cards. SIM cards are data chips that are programmed to be used by T-Mobile to hold account and phone details. GSM handsets provided by T-Mobile are locked to only work on T-Mobile networks by the manufacturer. These handset codes can be unlocked, however, enabling the handset to work on any GSM network.

Instructions

Getting an Unlock Code

1. Remove the back cover and battery from your phone. Take out the SIM card and write down the number that's printed on it. Write down the IMEI number that's printed on the sticker underneath the battery.

2. Call your wireless provider and ask for an unlock code. You will need to have your account information available, as well as the SIM card number and IMEI number. Sometimes they will be cooperative and supply you with the code; other times they will not and you'll have to look for an outside source to obtain a code.

3. Go online to look for a website that provides unlock codes, such as GSMliberty.net and Cellunlock.com (see Resources). Select a site, then select the make and model of your phone from the website. Fill in your IMEI and SIM card numbers. You may also be asked to provide payment details, since many phone unlock codes are provided at a fee.

4. Send your handset away to be unlocked. Some of the online websites will not be able to provide you with an unlock code over the phone. They will instead have to send your phone away to a company that will use a computer program or specialized software to unlock your phone. This service normally will cost $25 to $40 dollars.

Unlocking Your Handset with the Code

5. Replace the battery and back cover on your phone without the SIM card and switch it on.

6. Wait for your screen to read "Insert SIM." Once it does, type the unlock code exactly as it was given to you. If this is a Nokia phone, you may be given two codes. One code is used to get to an unlock screen and the other is used to unlock the phone. You may also be asked in this process to type in your IMEI number.

7. Turn off your phone once the screen reads "SIM restriction off."

8. Remove the back cover and battery. Insert the new SIM card.
