Cell phones provide people with quick and easy methods of communication.
Cell phones provide safety and security while traveling or at home. The average lifespan of a mobile device is two years, before it becomes outdated or begins to malfunction. Occasions arise, however, when you need a cell phone, but are unwilling or unable to sign a two-year agreement with a cellular provider. Deactivated cell phones can be reactivated without signing agreements.
Instructions
Unlock and Activate the Phone
1. Unlock the phone for use with other carriers. To unlock your specific model, contact the carrier your phone is registered with for the unlock code and instructions. Every phone is branded with the carrier's icon. If your phone is unbranded, contact the manufacturer.
2. Obtain a prepaid SIM card from a prepaid provider. Prepaid plans vary by carrier, but each offer no-contract and no-commitment service, with all the options of a post-paid or contracted plan.
3. Install the SIM card according to instructions, and contact the prepaid provider to activate the service. If your intention is to take a basic phone with you while traveling abroad, you can contact providers within the destination country for prepaid SIM cards. Prior to traveling, contact the manufacturer of the phone to verify that your device can operate on the frequency your destination country uses.
4. Purchase minutes based on your expected usage. When you no longer need the device to function, simply do not purchase any more minutes. The SIM card will remain valid as long as you need and will only require that you purchase more minutes to reactivate it.
