Cut Open Wire Telephone Lines

Avoid tangles like this by cutting your telephone wire to length.


Knowing cut open wire telephone lines makes tasks such as adding a telephone extension in your home easy. You need a few simple tools and practice to build up basic experience in electrical connections. Working on telephone wire is a good entry to more complex electrical wiring, including A/V, doorbells and intercoms. You can adapt this skill to TV and radio antenna troubleshooting, and even power connectors, after taking appropriate precautions and using test equipment.


Instructions


1. Detach the telephone wire from any fixtures or telephones. Measure your wire length prior to cutting.


2. Cut away two inches of the outer sleeve with the pocket knife to expose four insulated wires. Cut slowly to avoid damaging the wires beneath the outer sleeve.


3. Separate the wires from each other. Strip one half-inch of insulation from each of the four wires, one wire at a time, with the wire stripper or pocket knife.
