Installing A Wireless Pren Notebook Network Card

A wireless router transmits the signal to the laptop.

Belkin makes a line of laptop CardBus wireless network cards that are easy to install and allow you to use wireless networks on notebooks that don't support it natively. Pre-N wireless refers to the frequency band the wireless card uses. There are three pre-N choices: a, b and g. B and G use the 2.4 GHz band, while A uses the 5 GHz band. The disadvantage to B and G networks is that microwaves, Bluetooth devices and cordless phones all use this frequency as well, which can cause signal interference between the devices. Sometimes this results in slight static or signal strength loss, but other times it can stop wireless devices from connecting at all.

Instructions

1. Insert the installation CD into the laptop. Click "Install Software" once the CD auto runs. Press "Next" to start the installation process. Choose "Continue Anyway" if a hardware Installation window opens with a Windows warning.

2. Insert the wireless network card when the message "Please plug in your Network adapter to proceed" appears and hit "OK." Hit "Continue Anyway" if you see the same Windows warning screen that appeared at the beginning of the installation process. The installation wizard completes the driver installation of the network card.

3. Hit "Next" to start the installation process for the Belkin Wireless Client Utility. This utility gives you the ability to connect the network card to your wireless router. Click "Next" and make sure that "Run Belkin Wireless Client Utility" is checked. Click "Finish."

4. Find the new icon that appears in your system tray. This is the Belkin Wireless Client Utility. Double-click the icon to bring up the network status. Press "More" to see a list of all wireless networks in range. Find your wireless network name, also known as SSID, under "Networks" and double-click it. Enter the network key or password if prompted. Click "Save and Activate" to connect to the network.
