DKU-5 Compatible Phones
The DKU-5 is an older generation PC connectivity cable manufactured by Nokia. It is specifically used to connect Nokia mobile phones without USB support to computers and laptops. The DKU-5 cable is compatible with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP. Unfortunately, it has no support for Linux or any other OS other than Windows. DKU-5 compatible phones have a DKU pop-port on their sides which is used to connect the phone to a computer. The DKU-5 cable is only compatible with Nokia models 3100, 3200, 3220, 5070, 5100, 5140, 5140i, 6080, 6100, 6220, 6610, 6610i, 6800, 6810, 6820, 6822, 7200, 7210, 7250, 7250i, 7260, and 7360.
Advantages of DKU-5 Compatible Phones
The DKU-5 connectivity cable was the first to allow the creation of a solid bug-free interface between DKU-5 compatible mobiles and computers utilizing Nokia's award winning "PC Suite" software. With Nokia's PC Suite and a DKU-5 cable, you can transfer java games and applications from your PC to your cell phone.
From your PC, you can send text messages and update your contacts and phone settings. Additionally, you can transfer photos from the PC to the phone or vice versa. You may also back-up files from your phone onto your PC and then transfer them to another Nokia cell phone.
Disadvantages of DKU-5 Compatible Phones
The main disadvantage of DKU-5 compatible Nokia handsets is the absence of support for any non-Windows operating system, as a result, DKU-5 compatible handsets cannot be connected to any computer using a non-Windows OS like Linux. Moreover, the DKU-5 is a proprietary interface developed by Nokia and its specifications have not been released either to the public or to third party developers. As a result, it is impossible to develop any custom drivers and software applications for DKU-5 compatible Nokia phones.
Current Status
As of now, almost all handsets manufactured by Nokia are no longer compatible with the DKU-5 connecting adapter cable. Most Nokia phones are compatible to the new DKU-2 and CA-42 cables developed by Nokia. These cables offer multi-OS support.
