If you are a student sitting in class, "Silent Mode" can prevent confiscation of your cellphone.
No matter how old or new your cellphone is, chances are good it has a "Silent Mode" option. This feature serves the same purpose on every mobile phone, but depending on the brand and model, this mode may activate another feature as well. If you are attending a meeting or some other event where a ringing cellphone would be disruptive, or if you simply don't want to be bothered, silent mode can be useful to you.
What It Does
Silent mode on a cell phone silences the ringtone when an incoming call is received. Depending on your model, the phone may be completely silent or it may vibrate rather than ringing. Some phones have a menu that allows you to choose whether the phone vibrates when it is silent mode.
Considerations
A phone that vibrates when you switch to silent mode and doesn't allow you to switch off the vibration function can still make noise. If you keep your phone in your pocket, the noise of vibration will be muted by your clothing; but if your phone is on a hard surface such as a table or desk, the vibration may be even louder than the ringtone. On some phones, you can adjust the intensity of the vibration when this function is enabled.
Other Options
If you have a phone that does not give you the option of total silence, but Airplane Mode is available on the phone, consider using that in situations where you do not want to be disturbed by an incoming call. Important meetings, a night out at the movies or a formal family meal are examples of times when you might want to completely mute your phone. Airplane Mode effectively takes you off the cellphone grid; you will not be able to make or receive calls, e-mails or text messages. Some phones with Wi-Fi allow you to use Wi-Fi even when you are in Airplane Mode. If your phone works this way, you will still be able to access your email and the Internet --you just can't make or receive phone calls or texts.
Warning
Remember to switch your ringer back on when you no longer need your cellphone to be muted; otherwise, you may miss important calls or messages. Airplane Mode can be especially problematic. In Silent Mode, you may still see visual notifications that you've received calls or texts, but you won't see these notifications at all until you turn off Airplane Mode.
