Put Ipod Songs On An External Hard Drive

Get your iPod songs on your external hard drive.

The iPod serves as a great way to store all of the music in your MP3 library in one convenient small package. Still, many circumstances could occur that will make you lose all of that music. The device can tumble into a puddle, break or get stolen. That's why it's a good idea to back up your songs on your iPod by copying them to an external hard drive. The hard part about doing this, though, is finding the songs on the iPod.

Instructions

1. Connect your iPod to your computer using the connector cable and a USB port.

2. Enable disk use mode on your iPod. An iPod is, in essence, an external hard drive. You need your computer to treat it like one. Open iTunes, and then, on the left-hand menu, you will see your iPod. Click on your iPod. Here, you have your iPod's Options menu. On the bottom, click the box for "Enable disk use."

3. Make your hidden files visible. You will be able to find your iPod as an external hard drive in Windows Explorer, but you won't be able to find your songs. You need to make the folder "iPod_Control" visible. In Windows, go into the "Control Panel" and "Folder Options." Here, you will see a list of options; click the circle for "Show hidden files and folders." On a Mac, open up "Terminal" application on your computer from the "Applications" and "Utilities" folders. Enter this in the field: "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE" followed by "killall Finder".

4. Find your newly visible files. Your iPod should be listed as a removable hard drive from your computer's devices menu. Open it up. Now, open the "iPod_Control" folder. Open the "Music" folder. This is all the music from your iPod. It doesn't have the same file names as before, but it does have the tags.

5. Transfer your songs to an external hard drive. This is harder if you have one port. If you have one port, copy the songs to your computer's internal hard drive. After that, remove the iPod and connect the external hard drive. Copy the songs from your computer's internal hard drive to your external hard drive. If you have two ports, find external hard drive in the "Devices" menu and open it while the iPod is connected. Highlight all of the songs in the iPod window and drag them to the external hard drive window. They will automatically copy.
