Use A Garmin With A Laptop

The Garmin GPS is a handheld device that pinpoints the device's current location on a map and can provide directions to and from that location to a different point of interest. Garmin GPS units are also extremely handy and can help if a point of interest like a gas station or rest stop is needed on a trip. Garmin GPS units can be connected to a computer for updates or to charge the battery.

Instructions

1. Connect one end of the Garmin GPS unit's sync cable to the back of the device and connect the other end of the cable to an available USB port on the computer.

2. Navigate to the Garmin website using a web browser. Click on "My Garmin" at the top of the screen followed by the "Register Now" icon in the next window. Enter in your contact information and the unit's serial number when prompted to do so on-screen. Once the registration process is complete, the website will notice that a Garmin GPS unit is attached to the computer and will determine if any updates are needed.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the maps in the unit if needed. The Garmin website will also allow you to purchase add-ons for the unit including expanded maps, live traffic information and more. To do so, simply click on the option that you want to purchase and follow the on-screen instructions for that particular item.
