When you purchase a new cell phone from a carrier such as T-Mobile, the phone will come locked, making it only usable on that network. This can become an inconvenience when you want to switch carriers, but still want to use the same phone. To use your phone on another network, you must unlock your phone by entering a 16-digit unlock code. T-Mobile uses the GSM network, and unlocking the Blackberry Pearl 8100 will make the phone compatible with any other carrier also on the GSM network. In other words, the phone can be used on any network that uses SIM cards.
Instructions
1. Call T-Mobile and ask for an unlock code. T-Mobile's phone number is 800-937-8997. In most cases, as long as the customer is in good standing, T-Mobile will provide the unlock code. If you're unable to get the code from T-Mobile, you can also purchase the code online. A few popular dealers include iUnlock Blackberry, Cheap Unlocks and Unlock-Blackberry. (See Resources.)
2. Insert the SIM card into your phone if it's not already inserted.
3. Press the red power button to turn the phone on. Press the "Menu" key, select "Manage Connections," and then select to turn off all connections.
4. Select "Options," followed by "Advanced Options."
5. Scroll through the list and select "SIM Card."
6. Type "MEPPD."
7. Next, hold down the "Alt" button and then press "2."
8. Enter your 16-digit unlock code. Press "Enter" when finished.
9. Press the power key to turn the phone off and then press it once more to turn it back on. Your Blackberry 8100 is now unlocked.
