Unlock 3g Mobile Phones

Unlocking your 3G mobile phone lets you use it anywhere.

The third generation of mobile phone standards, known as 3G technology, allows you to have a data connection that is always on. This enables you to get emails or surf the Internet from anywhere you can get cell phone service. However, if you purchased your phone through a network, then it is likely "locked" to that network. If you are traveling abroad with your cell phone, you won't be able to use a local SIM card if you don't unlock the phone. That means you will pay expensive roaming charges.

Instructions

1. Get your phone's IMEI (international mobile equipment identification) number by typing "*#06#", on the keypad. A 15-digit number will appear on the screen. Copy it down; it is your IMEI number.

2. Select a provider of unlock codes. Dozens of sites offer this service. As of 2010, it costs between $12.95 to $35 for a single code.

3. Click on the website of your chosen unlock code provider. You will be asked to enter your email address, your phone's IMEI number and a mode of payment.

4. Check your email within the 24 to 48-hour code-generation period for your unlock code. Some services can send the email within minutes after email and payment confirmation. The email comes with the unlock code and the steps to unlocking your phone.

5. Turn the phone off and remove the SIM card. Replace the SIM card with one from a different service provider and turn the phone back on.

6. Type in your unlock code and hit the "OK" button. Your phone may beep and blink, then it will restart. When it comes back on it will be unlocked.
