What Is Microsoft Works 7 0

Microsoft Works 7.0 is similar to the Microsoft Office Suite. Instead of programs like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Works 7.0 features programs that are a little less sophisticated and a little less expensive. Microsoft Works will often come for free on new PC purchases, whereas the Office Suite must be purchased separately.

Function

Works 7.0 can be used to create resumes, greeting cards, and form letters. Users can also use Microsoft Works 7.0 to create a budget, plan improvements to make around the house, and compile records such as Social Security numbers and bank account information.

Considerations

One of the main things to consider when trying to decide between Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office is compatibility. Although Works will work fine on your own computer, if somebody sends a Microsoft Word file that was saved as a .docx file to you, you will not be able to open it with Works. Only Microsoft Word will open this kind of file. The default save setting for all Microsoft Word documents is .docx.

Benefits

In addition to including a word processing program, Microsoft Works 7.0 also includes a calendar feature that allows users to combine up to 32 different calendars. This means a person can consolidate and keep track of the calendars of a lot of different people. Works 7.0 also has an online component which allows users to connect to a Works online site that includes updates and additional templates that are not included in the original Works 7.0 software.

Size

Because there are a lot of different features associated with Microsoft Works 7.0, there is a lot of memory space required on a computer to install it and run it. In order to run Microsoft Works 7.0 on a Windows XP operating system, the computer needs nearly 500 MB. To install the software on Windows Vista, more than 800 MB is needed. Likewise, at least 256 MB of RAM is needed to run Works 7.0 on Windows XP and 1 GB is needed to run the program on Windows Vista.

Features

Microsoft Works 7.0 features a task launcher screen which provides a central location from which all Works functions can be accessed. From the Microsoft Works Task Launcher screen, a user can access the Works word processor as well as the spreadsheet program. Calendars and templates are also included on links on this page. If the Microsoft Office Suite is also downloaded onto the computer, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint can all be accessed from this screen as well.
