Change A File Format

Windows

Often, a file's format may be changed by simply renaming the file with another extension, such as .txt or .html. Other times, the file's format may be altered by processing the file with a software application, such as when converting a Word document to a PDF. In yet other instances, file conversion utility applications are used to change a file format, like when converting a WAV file to an MP3. For this example, the file format of a text file will be changed to html.

Instructions

1. Right-click the "Start" button on the Windows desktop.

2. Click "Explore" from the "Start" context menu.

3. Navigate to the text file to be changed to html format.

4. Right-click on the text file.

5. Select "Rename" from the context menu. The file name will highlight and allow for editing the file extension.

6. Change the .txt file extension to .htm or .html. Notice that the file icon changes from a text file icon to a web page file icon.

7. Double-click the file icon with the new extension. The file will open with a browser instead of notepad as the operating system now recognizes the file by its new extension of .htm (or .html).
