Block A Land Line Number

Block a Land Line Number

You don't always want your land line phone number displaying on the caller IDs of people or businesses you call. Maybe you need to call an ex, and you'd prefer he didn't know your new phone number, or maybe you don't want a business using your number for sales calls. Fortunately, there's several options for blocking your land line phone number, most of which charge reasonable monthly fees or per-use charges.

Instructions

1. Press *67 before dialing a number. In North America, most carriers provide the code *67, which blocks the caller's name or phone number from displaying on a recipient's caller ID. This is a temporary (for that call only) blocking feature, and it's free. Contact your carrier to verify they use this code for call blocking. Keep in mind that the person you called might press "Redial" and call you back. If your name and phone number are on your voice messaging, they will hear it.

2. Request automatic call blocking. Call your local carrier and request automatic call blocking on your land line phone number. This means your name and phone number will never be forwarded to others' caller IDs when you make outgoing calls (typically, "Private Caller" will instead display). Most carriers let you dial *82 to temporarily unblock your name and number before dialing a number (verify this code with your carrier). There is a monthly fee for automatic call blocking.

3. Use a calling card. Every time you use a calling card to make an outgoing call, your personal information is not forwarded to the recipient's caller ID (instead, the person sees "Unknown" or an 800 number). The calling card includes instructions, which include calling an 800 number, entering a personal identification number (PIN) and dialing the number you're calling. Calling cards are available at grocery stores and convenience stores. Some, such as CallingCardPlus, are also available online.

4. Use a call spoofing service. When you "spoof" a call, it means you alter your phone number on the recipient's caller ID. Purchase a call spoofing service online, such as Spoofcard.com.The spoofing service provides the instructions (typically on their website), which include calling an 800 number, entering a PIN number, dialing the number you wish to call and entering a number you want to display as the caller ID.
