Make Calls From A Computer Using Google Voice

If you have access to the Internet and a Google Voice account, it is possible to use the service to make calls directly from your computer. Google Voice is an Internet-based phone service and communication platform provided by Google. Voicemail, number porting and free calls to phones in the US and Canada are some of the features users can take advantage of with this service. You can make a call directly from Gmail since the service is embedded in the account.

Instructions

1. Launch a Web browser and then navigate to the Google Voice plug-in download page.

2. Click the "Install voice and video Chat" button to download the plug-in to your computer.

3. Close all open browser windows and then double-click the plug-in file to install it. The plug-in installs automatically.

4. Re-launch a web browser and navigate to the Google Gmail sign in page.

5. Enter your Gmail account username and password in the appropriate fields, then click "Sign in." Your Gmail account's main page opens.

6. Click the "Call phone" link located under "Chat" in the left pane of the window. A pop-up "Call" box opens. If the phone icon next to the Call phone link is gray, you must first sign in to Chat to activate the Google Voice calling feature. Click the small "Arrow" next to Chat, then select "Sign into Chat." The gray phone icon turns green, signifying Google Voice is active.

7. Type the number you want to call in the "Search or dial" box, then click the "Call" button. Google Voice dials the phone number and connects you with the other party.
