Activate Prepaid Cell Phone Cards At Home

Prepaid SIM card.

You can purchase a prepaid handset at just about any grocery store, convenience store or electronic store. These prepaid phone packages do not have to be activated in store and can, in fact, be activated in your home on your own time. There are a few ways to do this and most activation can take place at any time of day.

Instructions

1. Call customer service. If you've purchased a prepaid cell phone pack that contains both your handset and your prepaid SIM card, you can have your SIM card activated over the phone. First, you will need to have your SIM card number, which is printed on the face of your SIM card. This is the small white data chip that you insert into the back of your phone. You also need the IMEI number, which is printed on a sticker under the battery of your handset. Once you give this information to the agent and any other account details they ask for such as your date of birth, name and address, they will activate the SIM card.

2. Activate the SIM card online. Go to the website displayed on your activations card. Click "Activate a prepaid SIM card." You need to have your name, address, phone number, SIM number, IMEI number, city and state that you want your phone number listed under and your date of birth for activation. Your prepaid activations kit may also have an activation number. Enter this number in the blank space allocated. You will receive confirmation instantly along with your phone number.

3. Call the activation's automated service. Depending on your phone carrier, you may have to activate your prepaid SIM card via automated service. In order to go through this service you must have a regular phone and not a rotary phone. Also, be prepared to enter your SIM and IMEI numbers, your city, state and zip code, as well as your name and street address. You may also be prompted to choose a four to six digit passcode for your account. Choose your passcode to conclude the activation.

2. Try formatting your card. To do so, press the "Menu" button on your phone and select "Applications." Select the memory card folder.

3. Select "Options" and select "Format memory card." Select "Yes" to confirm. Your card is formatted. When the process completes, enter a name for your card. Make sure the number of characters does not exceed 11.

Will 4g Verizon Phones Work Around The World

The two most widely used networks in the world are Global System for Mobile Communications network and Code Division Multiple Access. Most cellphones are designed to work exclusively with one network or the other. Most countries outside of the United States use GSM. Verison uses CDMA. While CDMA networks exist abroad, they're present in fewer locations than GSM. Thus, Verizon 4G phones won't work literally all over the world, but they will work in certain countries.

Phones

While Verizon offers some global phones designed to work with both GSM and CDMA networks, none of these are part of the company's 4G lineup as of July 2011. Verizon offers three 4G phones. These are the LG Revolution, the HTC Thunderbolt and the Samsung Droid Charge. All of these are CDMA only and won't work on any GSM network regardless of location.

Locations

According to Verizon, there are 43 countries outside the United States where any of its CDMA phones, including its 4G models, can successfully place calls. Of these, only 28 support the data exchange technologies that allow the phones to connect to the Internet over 4G or 3G networks. The 3G networks are accessible to 4G phones when 4G networks are unavailable. A partial list of countries that allow both voice and data exchange includes Canada, Mexico, China, India, Israel, Jamaica and South Korea. For a complete list, visit verizonwireless.com. Point to "Plans" and click "International Services" from the drop-down menu. Click "CDMA" under "Countries by Technology."

Cost

Verizon charges you a roaming rate to place voice calls abroad. This is because the company doesn't actually have its own network outside the United States and must "borrow" service from the existing networks in other regions. These rates range from $0.69 per minute to $2.89 per minute depending on the country, as of July 2011. Text messaging is $0.50 to send a message and $0.05 to receive a message unless you're in Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico. In these regions, Verizon charges you the same amount for text messaging as it does on your domestic plan. Data requires you to sign up for a global data plan. Rates for these plans range from $30 to $100 depending on the country and the amount of data allowed.

Considerations

Different carriers have different definitions of what constitutes a 4G network. Verizon calls its Long Term Evolution network 4G. According to "PC Magazine," this network operates at an average speed of 9.46 megabits per second and a maximum of 37.66Mbps. Compare this to an average 3G speed of 0.7Mbps and a maximum of 2.49Mbps. When traveling abroad, Verizon's LTE phones will rarely have access to LTE networks. This is because most countries don't have LTE networks at all, let alone those that use the frequency bands compatible with Verizon's 4G phones. Thus, in locations abroad where network access is available, it will usually be at 3G speeds.

If you forget about your voice mails, sending reminders to your cell phone can help you.

Most modern telephones will alert you when somebody has left you a voice mail. However, once you have viewed this notification, it is marked as "read" and you no longer have a reminder that voice mails are waiting for you. However, with a computer and access to the Internet, you can send voice mail reminders to your phone to keep these messages in mind and eventually reply to everyone. Setting up such a system can also help you connect a land-line voice-mail box to your cell phone.

3. Substitute your own port number for the numbers 8800 in the above address. To find your port number, click "Start" on the bottom of your computer screen, then "Run" from the menu that appears. In the window that opens, type in cmd in the "Open" box, then click "OK." In the second window that opens, type netstat -o, then press the "Enter" key. You will be able to see your port number in this window.

If you choose the latter, replace the + that is usually used with %2B. For example, +33643044771 would change to %2B33643044771.

5. At the end of the Web address, type "On," which will turn on the message indicator, or "Off," which will turn it off.

Sliding Door Problems

A sliding door should glide easily and be able to be opened using only one hand.

Although regular inspection and cleaning of sliding door rollers and tracks can help keep a door operating smoothly, if the rollers are completely worn out a new door may be the only solution. Does this Spark an idea?

Dirty Rollers

Dirty rollers are the main cause of sliding door problems, according to This Old House. Dirt, mud, food or hair can stick to the rollers and clog the track of a sliding door, causing the rollers to become immovable and the door to get stuck. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the rollers, scrape the dirt from the rollers and wipe them with denatured alcohol and a rag. Vacuum the track thoroughly to remove debris and wipe stuck-on particles with a damp cloth. Lubricate the track with a block of paraffin wax.

Misaligned Rollers

Misaligned rollers can cause a sliding door to stick or not slide at all. Look closely at the door to locate two screw holes or plugs on the sides or front of the door. Use a screwdriver to pop the plugs off and turn the screws inside until the door lifts. Look underneath at the roller wheels to determine if they are in good condition or are worn out, bent or broken and in need of replacement. Manually realign the rollers as needed if they are in good condition.

Additional Tips

Keep the door sliding smoothly by vacuuming the track well each time the room is cleaned. If the door remains immovable after attempts to fix the rollers, the door may have been installed incorrectly or there may be a more serious structural problem, such as an undersized header above the door or a rotten sill. Contact a remodeling contractor for a professional opinion.

Does Spyware Doctor Remove Malware

Spyware Doctor helps to keep your computer protected.

The latter is the standard and less expensive version of the software that performs only the basic functions of spyware detection and removal, where as the anti-virus version is designed to detect and remove both malware and spyware.

Viruses are enhanced malware programs that are programmed to replicate themselves, spread throughout your computer, and potentially infect other computers as well.

About Spyware

The primary difference between malware and spyware is that malware is designed to harm your computer, whereas spyware is designed to run unnoticed, stealing information from your computer such as browsing history, credit card information and passwords without you ever knowing it. Spyware generally won't interfere with your ability to operate your computer and as such is categorized differently from malware.

Three Way Call On A House Phone

Three-way calling, also known as conference calling, is a long-time staple of enhanced home telephone service. This ingenius offering allows busy individuals to quickly and easily establish an impromptu conference between two different parties at two different telephone numbers without the need for expensive conferencing stations or additional hardware.

Instructions

1. Establish the first call. Whether you place the first call or someone calls you, you must first be on one call before adding another party to that call. Although you must initiate the second call of the three-way conversation, the service works the same, and with the same outcome, whether you initiated or received the first call.

2. Briefly depress the switchhook to receive another dial tone. When your first call is in progress and you are ready to add another party to your conversation, depress the switchhook (the small, probably plastic, switch on your telephone that pops up when you lift the receiver) for approximately one-half to three-quarters of a second. This very brief disconnect signals the telephone network that you want to make a three-way call, and you should hear a new dial tone after releasing the switchhook. Please note that you must subscribe to your local telephone company's "Three-Way Calling" service in order to receive the second dialtone; if you do not subscribe, you may either get no result or your original call may be disconnected. As an added note, be sure not to depress the switchhook for more than one second, as doing so may disconnect your original call.

3. Dial the telephone number of the second party. When you hear the dialtone after briefly depressing the switchhook, your first call has been placed on hold and the telephone network is ready to place your second call. Simply dial the telephone number (local, local toll, long distance, or international) just as you would dial were you making a traditional telephone call. Wait for the number to ring and the other party to answer.

4. Briefly depress the switchhook again to join the two calls. When your second party answers, inform that person that you will be adding him into a three-way call and get that person's approval before proceeding. Once the person approves, briefly depress the switchhook (holding the hook down for one-half to three-quarters of a second) and release it. When the switchhook is released, both parties should be joined together into one telephone call. You may, as is common practice, confirm that both parties are present by calling their names and waiting for a response.

5. To end the three-way call, briefly depress the switchhook one more time or simply hang up. Ending the three-way call may be done in a couple of ways. If you wish to retain your original call, but disconnect the second party, depress the switchhook (holding it down for one-half to three-quarters of a second) and release it; after the hook is released, the second party should be gone and your first conversation will continue with normal privacy. If you wish to end the entire conversation, simply hang up the telephone and both parties will be disconnected.

Unblock The Sim Card

Unblock the SIM Card

Unblocked SIM cards allow you to use multiple devices with one cellular plan, as well as to use the SIM card outside the country. Some cell phone providers do not make the instructions for unblocking a SIM card readily available. However, knowing basic information about your cell phone will allow you to unblock your SIM card quickly.

Instructions

1. Determine the model number of your phone. Phone models sometimes have slightly different software from similar models. Locate your phone's model number by either looking in the original packaging or turning the phone off, removing the battery and looking for the model number on the base of the phone where the battery was located. With some phones, the specific model will come up on the screen when you turn the phone on.

2. Record your phone's IMEI number. An IMEI number, also known as the international mobile equipment identity number, identifies your phone for security reasons. You can find your IMEI number by turning off the phone, removing the battery and locating the 15 digit number on the base of the phone, behind the battery.

3. Contact your cellular provider and speak with the technical support department. Have the model number and the IMEI number of your cellular phone available. Depending on your provider, the technician may be able to give you the unblock code for your phone. Each phone has a different method for inputting the unlock code. Your technical support representative will guide you through the process.

4. If your provider is unable to provide the unlock code (sometimes due to contractual obligations with the phone manufacturer) search online for websites that will help you unlock the SIM card (see resources). They may charge a fee in the range of $5 to $25. Visit the site and input your IMEI number. You should receive your unlock code within 24 to 48 hours.

5. Input the unlock code into your phone. Each phone and model has different steps for unlocking the SIM card once you have the code. Some websites will provide instructions for unlocking your phone after inputting your IMEI number (see resources). Input your model number and select your phone's brand (BlackBerry, HTC, etc.) to get your instructions.

Send Files From A Pc To A Mobile Using Bluetooths

PC to mobile, with Bluetooth

Files can be exchanged wirelessly and quickly using Bluetooth technology. Most newer computers and cell phones are equipped for Bluetooth and can communicate between each other and exchange files. Since many phones cannot accommodate large files, the types of file exchanges a phone can accept from a computer are limited. The cell phone will know immediately whether it can handle a transfer.

Instructions

1. Activate the Bluetooth transmitter on your cell phone and make sure it is "Discoverable." This ensures that the computer you wish to pair it with can find it.

2. Activate the Bluetooth transmitter on your computer and make sure that it also is discoverable.

3. Select "Set Up Bluetooth Device" from the Bluetooth menu on the computer. The computer will now search for other discoverable Bluetooth devices within a range of approximately 30 feet. When it has located the cell phone, it will typically prompt you to enter a numeric pass code. The pass code can be any set of numbers you choose. It is preferable to make it simple and easy to remember. You will only need to use it once more.

4. Enter the same numeric pass code on the cell phone when prompted, after you have entered it into the computer. You have now authorized the devices to communicate. You will not need to enter this pass code in the future because the devices will recognize one another.

5. Select "Send File" from the Bluetooth menu on the computer.

6. Locate the file you wish to send to the cell phone and select "Send." The cell phone will alert you if it cannot handle the file transfer. If it is compatible, it will most likely prompt you to verify that you wish to accept the file transfer. Do so.

My Nokia N97 Touch Screen Is Not Working

The Nokia N97 has a touch screen and keyboard interface.

The Nokia N97 smartphone has two methods of interacting with the phone: the touch screen and the built-in keyboard. A majority of the phone's navigation is done with the touch screen. If the touch screen is not working, you can't use many of the phone's features. Troubleshooting the Nokia N97 touch screen can return it to normal operation.

Types of Problems

The Nokia N97 touch screen can stop working in two ways. The first is the screen is frozen, meaning it does not respond when you tap the touch screen. A frozen touch screen is often the result of an error with the phone's software. The external buttons may still operate the phone when the touch screen is inoperable. The second type of problem with the touch screen is that it does not respond to where you are touching the screen. For example, you tap one menu item and a different item on the list is chosen. This is a screen calibration issue.

Frozen Screen Solution

Repairing a frozen touch screen on the Nokia N97 requires you to restart your phone. If the side buttons are working, turn off the phone using the "Power" button. This is the standard, and easier, method of shutting down the phone. If the side buttons aren't working, remove the battery from the back of the phone to force the phone off, and then reinstall the battery. Once the phone is off, press the "Power" button to turn it back on. The touch screen functionality should return to the phone.

Calibration Solutions

Nokia designed the N97 with a touch-screen calibration program to remedy problems with the touch screen. Opening the touch-screen calibration program requires you to use the touch screen, which can prove difficult. You're forced to judge where to tap the screen because the screen isn't recording the precise location of your taps. To find the touch-screen calibration program, open the main menu, select "Settings" and then "Touch Input." The program provides on-screen instructions to help you finish calibrating the screen.

Repeated Problems

Troubleshooting the Nokia N97 when the touch screen isn't working may only fix the problem for a short time. When the touch screen regularly stops working, take note of the programs you are using when the problem occurs. If you notice that one program causes the problem with the touch screen, remove the program from the phone. In the event you can't pinpoint which program or action is causing the problem, you can perform a hard reset to return the phone to its factory settings, which is how the phone came out of the box. A hard reset deletes all of your data, settings and any programs that you installed on the phone. To perform a hard reset, turn off the phone. Press and hold the left "Shift" button, "Space," "Backspace" and "Power" until the phone starts up. If the hard reset doesn't solve the problem, visit your service provider.

Use Google Maps To Map Data

The Internet is changing the way maps are viewed

Google Maps is a popular and free online mapping service that provides traditional maps, driving directions, location photos and satellite imagery. Within seconds, any Internet user can quickly discover an address and many details about its location. While Google Maps also allows for the simultaneous plotting of numerous locations on a single map, its online interface does not make this feature accessible. Instead, location data must be created in a spreadsheet and converted into a "KML" file format that is understood by Google Maps. These steps are straightforward, and do require an additional data conversion utility.

Instructions

1. Acquire spreadsheet software. Use any spreadsheet program you desire. Microsoft Excel is a common application for this purpose, but there are also many free options. The Open Office suite is free open-source office software, including a spreadsheet program. Google also provides a free online spreadsheet program in its Google Docs system.

2. Locate a spreadsheet conversion utility that transfers data into the Google Maps data format. Batch Geo is a good free option that allows anyone to quickly paste map data into the Batch Geo website and immediately convert and map the data on Google Maps.

3. Enter your mapping data into a spreadsheet. Follow the spreadsheet format required by the mapping utility you will use. For Batch Geo, for example, the map data must be separated into multiple columns to separate the street address from the rest of the address. Additional columns provide the name of each address for its plotted location on the Google Maps website.

4. Copy the spreadsheet data. Use your mouse to drag over the columns and the rows that contain information. Then use the copy button or the "Control-C" keyboard shortcut to copy the data.

5. Paste the map data into the map utility. Then press the utility's convert or map button to complete the process. The data is opened in Google Maps and each location is identified.

Repair A Motorola Cell Phone Mic

Check the cell phone microphone.

As with other phones, the Motorola line of wireless phones can run into issues with its microphone. Occasionally, when you talk into the phone you may hear static. This is a recording issue on the microphone. Although you shouldn't have trouble fixing the microphone, if it is excessively damaged (typically due to water exposure) there isn't anything you can do but buy a new phone.

Instructions

1. Power down your cell phone. Sometimes just shutting down the phone for a few minutes and then restarting it can fix any problems you are experiencing.

2. Wipe off the phone if exposed to moisture such as sweat. If your phone is excessively wet you want to keep it off for a few hours until it dries.

3. Walk outside with your phone. You may have recording issues because you are in an area that doesn't have much service.

4. Avoid rubbing the phone over the side of your face when you are talking. Moving the phone around can cause a crackling sound.

5. Clean out the area around the microphone. There may be dirt and dust in the small ridges that lead to the microphone. Clear the dirt out with your fingernail or a small pin. This can clear up issues with the microphone.

Troubleshooting Dsl Modem Not Working

DSL Modem

DSL stands for digital subscriber line, and though it has been around as a technology for quite a while, phone companies are just finally starting to utilize it to its fullest abilities. For fast connections to the Internet, the only requirement other than a phone line and a computer is a DSL modem. The DSL modem translates the data over the phone lines and is a simple but critical device. Troubleshooting a problematic DSL modem is usually straightforward.

Test Connections

Make sure all connections in the back of the modem are fully connected and not loose or ripped. If everything appears to be plugged in, try unplugging each connection and reconnecting them back. Restart the computer and see if the DSL modem is providing any connection to the Internet.

Reset Modem

Reset the DSL modem. There should be a small pinhole in the back of the modem that you can reset by pushing a pin or the end of a paper clip in and hitting a button. Hold the button in for a few seconds and then release. This should reset the DSL modem and often clears up problems.

Disconnect

Start taking out any unnecessary parts of your network. If you have a separate router remove it from the network and connect your DSL modem directly to your computer to see if you still have problems. This could point to issues elsewhere that are unrelated to the DSL modem.

If everything else is working and you are still having DSL modem problems, contact your provider to see if there is a local outage. Outages, and not equipment problems, are often the reason for a failure to connect to the Internet.

Set Up Bluetooth To Work With A Car

Set Up Bluetooth to Work with a Car

Having audio in your car connected to your phone via Bluetooth is a great convenience and makes for safer driving. There are no wires involved and you don't have to remember to reconnect it every time you get into the car. You need two pieces of equipment: one is a Bluetooth enabled phone and other is a Bluetooth speaker or speakerphone device. You can use a Bluetooth headset, a car speaker device or you can get an in-dash radio with built-in Bluetooth. The speakerphone or in-dash system is preferred to the headset as you don't have to put on your ear every time you drive or find the headset before you drive. The in-dash/speakerphone system is even better as they have features like turning down your radio when you get a call.

Instructions

1. Turn on Bluetooth on both devices, the exact procedure depends on your devices but for dedicated Bluetooth speakerphone this usually done by pushing the 'ON' button.

2. Steps 3 to 6 allows your phone to recognize/connect to your device when they are in within 10 feet of each other. This is called 'pairing'.

3. Set your Bluetooth speakerphone/in-dash system to discovery mode. This depends on your device and is done so that your phone can locate it.

4. Set you phone to search for Bluetooth devices, this depends on your type of phone. It should locate your speakerphone/headset and possibly more depending on what other devices are around. Select your device. They are usually named with their manufacturer and model number. The phone will then try to connect to your speakerphone/headset.

5. If the phone was able to connect to your speakerphone/headset, it will ask for a password. This password is typically set by the manufacturer of your device (many use '0000'). Input the password for your device. Sometimes in-dash speakerphone will also prompt for a password and you have to input the same password as you put in your phone.

6. The phone and speakerphone/headset should now be paired. If you try a call on your phone you should hear the sound through your speakers and be able to talk into your external microphone.

7. If you cannot hear calls from your phone on your device, you should turn off both devices and go back to the first step. Sometimes it takes two tries to work properly.

8. You should not have to pair again your phone and device every time you use it. Most phones will automatically find the device again once you turn them both on. In some cases, you need to tell the phone to connect to the device.

Full Version Arcade Games

Purchase full sized arcade games for your game room.

Arcade games were at one time the heart and soul of video games. Before every kid on the block had his own home gaming system, gamers congregated at the local arcade, shoving fists full of quarters into their favorite machines. While the glory days of the arcade have passed, you can still play full version arcade games in some form.

Arcade Games on Classic Consoles

Classic consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Atari brought full version arcade games into your home for the first time. Games like Pac-Man, Galaga, Missile Command and Centipede were all arcade games that you could play at home. Collecting these pieces of gaming history is an entertaining pastime, with many game available for only a few dollars at online auction sites.

Arcade Games on Modern Consoles

You can play full version arcade games on modern consoles using their online purchasing systems. The Wii Shop Channel, Play Station Network and Xbox Live Arcade all offer full versions of classic arcade games. Purchase points and download the games directly to your console's on board hard drive. Additionally, publishers like Taito and Namco sometimes bundle collections of their old games on a single console game. Expect to pay anywhere from budget title price (about $19.99) to full title price (about $39.99) for these collections, as of May 2011.

Arcade Cabinets

Full version arcade games first existed in the arcade. Experience all of the fun and pleasure of quarter-pumping in your own home by purchasing full sized arcade cabinets. You can find listings for older units on online classifieds, there are stores that specialize in arcade cabinets and pinball machines, and many trade shows and auctions also specialize in full sized arcade games.

MAME

Multiple Arcade Machine Emulators (MAME) are custom-built arcade units that contain many different full version arcade games all on one single machine. They often use a computer and a small television in an old full sized arcade cabinet that has been stripped of its parts. The idea behind MAME is to preserve and play classic arcade games in the most nostalgic manner possible.
