Install My N95 Garmin

You can add a navigational feature to the Nokia N95 phone with the Garmin Mobile XT application. This allows you to input directions and receive voice and text instructions just as you would get using a stand-alone GPS device. The application can be downloaded directly from Garmin, and is stored on the N95's internal hard disk.

Instructions

1. Right-click in an empty spot on your computer desktop. Select "New" and "Folder." Name the new folder "Garmin."

2. Download the Garmin GPS install files.

3. Connect the Nokia phone to the computer with its sync cable.

4. Open the "Garmin" folder. Double-click the file "GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_42020." Click "Setup" when prompted. The Garmin Setup screen opens.

5. Highlight the removable drive that represents the connected phone in the Setup screen. Click "Install." The Garmin software installs the designated file on the phone.

6. Open and install the files "GarminMobileXTSupportFils_4xxxx" and "GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx" inside the Garmin folder and follow the prompts to install them on the N95.

7. Disconnect the phone. Select "Yes" to begin running Garmin Mobile XT. Follow the prompts to set selections, language and other user options.

If you have a Nokia phone, the good news is that they are fairly easy to unlock. This is true of both prepaid and contract Nokia phones. Since the majority of Nokia's phones operate by Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards, you can use practically any network that supplies SIM cards. GSM networks all use SIM cards, which will also enable you to use your unlocked Nokia around the world.

Instructions

Getting an Unlock Code

1. Remove the back cover and battery from your Nokia phone. Write down the SIM card number and IMEI number. The SIM card number is printed on the front of the SIM card, and the IMEI number is printed on the sticker underneath the battery.

2. Go on a website that specializes in generating Nokia unlock codes. (See Resources.) You need to provide your Nokia model, IMEI number and SIM card number. The unlock website services are not always free, so you may need to have your payment details handy in case there is a fee.

3. Replace the battery and cover on your cell phone. Do not replace the SIM card.

The Jawbone 1 Pairing Instructions

The Jawbone 1 is a wireless headset that connects to a mobile phone using Bluetooth. Before you can use your Jawbone 1, you need to go through a setup process called pairing. You only need to go through the pairing process once. When the Jawbone 1 is paired with your phone, the phone will remember the connection settings until you delete the pair.

Instructions

1. Charge your Jawbone headeset until it is fully charged.

Instructions

1. Have a cell phone that is Bluetooth compatible. You can check your cell phone to make sure that it is Bluetooth compatible by looking in the settings. There should be an option for Bluetooth listed. Click on it and ensure that it is set to "Allow other Bluetooth devices to find me."

2. Unpack the Bluetooth headset. You want to make sure that you allow the Bluetooth time to charge or it may not be able to locate the receiver chip in your cell phone. While you wait for your Bluetooth to charge, you can also use the time to charge your cell phone.

3. Turn on the cell phone and the Bluetooth. The instruction book that came with the Bluetooth should have a pictured diagram showing which buttons provide which function on your Bluetooth. Open the headset boom, which is the mouthpiece that folds under the earpiece on your Bluetooth.

4. Press and hold the button on your Bluetooth designed to locate pairs. The Bluetooth will flash a blue light three times to indicate it is searching for a receiver chip. On your cell phone, go to "Settings" and select "Bluetooth." The cell phone and the Bluetooth should lock on each other as a pair.

5. Enter a pairing code in the pop up box. Generally the code is 00000. Once you have this entered, your cell phone should say, "Pairing successfully completed." When you open the boom of the Bluetooth and put the Bluetooth to your ear, you should be able to hear your cell phone.

Simply put, a virtual private network (VPN) is a private network that uses the Internet for communication to save companies money on their data needs. VPNs can be imagined as a tunnel between a computer's remote desktop and a company's network on the Internet. The tunnels are encrypted for private data transmission and can be accessed only through decryption of the encryption. In VPN, tunneling protocols must be used. The tunnel's end point is the remote desktop, and the virtual network literally acts as two network interface cards (NICs) wired together.

Instructions

Determine Specifics

1. Open your Internet browser. In the address bar type "http://192.168.1.1", which is the Linksys router's default IP address. Type the user name and password for the router. After the authentication process is complete, the router's Web page will appear.

2. Click "Status" on the setup page to access the router's status page. There are two tabs at the top of the page. The first one is the "Gateway" tab, and the second is the "Local Network" tab. From the Gateway tab, write down the Gateway IP address that shows next to Internet IP Address Lease. Click the "Local Network" tab, and write down the LAN IP address that shows next to IP Address.

3. Determine which tunnel name will be used: Authentication or Encryption method. For Authentication, there are three choices: Disabled, MD 5 and SHA. For Encryption, there are also three choices: Disabled, DES and 3 DES.

4. Click "Security" on the Linksys router Web page. Click "VPN." In the "VPN Pass-Through" section, enable both "IPSec Pass-Through" and "PPTP Pass-Through."

5. Go to the "VPN Tunnel" section. Set "Select Tunnel Entry" to "Tunnel 1," "VPN Tunnel" to "Enabled," and "Tunnel Name" to "Preferred tunnel name of choice." In the "Local Secure Group" section, select "subnet" from the drop-down list. In the "IP," type the IP address or range of IP addresses that will access the VPN. In the "Mask" number, type the mask that corresponds to the IP address entered. Set the "Remote Security Gateway" to "any" if access to VPN will be allowed for any user who has a pre-shared key, or select an IP address or a range of IP addresses for the "Remote Security Gateway" group.

6. Select "DES" or "3DES" from the Encryption drop-down list. It is not recommended to disable encryption. "DES" is not recommended either because it can't stand a brute force attack. From the Authentication drop-down list, select either "MD 5" or "SHA."

7. Select "Auto (IKE)" from the Key Management drop-down list. Enable "PFS." Set the Preshared Key to the password that will be used to access the "VPN." This is the most important security piece of information for the VPN. Enter the Key Lifetime, and set it to "3600" seconds.

8. Click "Save Settings" and then "Connect."

VoIP, an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol, has entered the mainstream in many parts of the world. As most VoIP service providers offer an "all you can eat" long distance service, most people do not have to worry about the telephone bill varying from month to month. Several VoIP companies also offer international calling to many countries either included as part of their premium packages or at extremely low per-minute rates

Adoption Rates

Vonage is perhaps the best-known provider of VoIP with roughly 2.5 million customers as of mid-2009 but is eclipsed by Comcast who boasts a VoIP subscriber base of more than 7 million. In fact, Comcast became the third largest provider of voice service in the United States in 2009.

Portability

Among the many advantages of VOIP is the ability to pick up your ATA adapter (telephone connection) and bring it with you, allowing your telephone number to go anywhere you travel that has a suitable broadband connection. T-Mobile's Unlimited HotSpot Calling plan combines the ability of its dual mode cell/Wi-Fi phone to make VoIP calls wherever an open Wi-Fi hot spot is available.

International Calling

Most of the U.S.- and Canadian-based VoIP providers bundle unlimited calling in all North America into their premium packages. Many, Vonage included, also provide free calling to a select group of European countries at no additional cost with the excluded countries available at greatly reduced rates.

Cost

Most of the popular VoIP providers have centered their unlimited calling plans for residential customers in the $25 per month range in 2009. Among the least expensive of the cut-rate companies is MagicJack which provides unlimited calling for about $40 for the first year, including the cost of its hardware. A second year of service is available for about $20. Customer service and tech support are what you might expect from a low price, but the VoIP service does work and the sound clarity is equal to many other telephone services, certainly surpassing the quality of cellular.

The Future

With the dramatic drop in the cost of telephone service plummeting as much as it has in the last decade, the race to provide free service has begun. Google now provides Google Voice, previously known as Grand Central. With a little ingenuity and some technical prowess, it is now possible to make and receive calls almost anywhere at zero cost. Within the next several years, it is entirely within the scope of technology to provide voice service as an expected part of a broadband service package.

Configure Text Messaging On The Motorola V505

Hang Phones

While some people choose to simply rest telephones on a flat surface, most standard home phones are equipped for easy hanging. One key benefit of hanging your phone is that you save space. A hanging phone is also convenient if you have a board or message pad on the wall next to it on which you can write notes.

Instructions

1. Decide on the area of the wall (and the room) where you want to position the phone. Choose a clear space on the wall that is about five feet high on the wall (lower or higher depending on the average height of people in your home). If available, choose the place on the wall where you see a phone jack.

2. Use a hammer to drive a single standard nail into the wall in your chosen location. Leave at least a half an inch of the nail hanging out of the wall.

3. Connect your telephone to the jack with a phone cord before you attempt to hang it. Hold the cord to the bottom or side of the phone so that it will stay that way when hung. If the jack is on the wall where you plan to hang the telephone, just connect the phone cord and then tuck the extra length into an opening on the back of the phone (you can also tape it in place).

4. Search for the nail hanging hole at the back of the phone. This is a small key-shaped hole that is made to fit a standard nail. Line the nail up with the hole and hang the phone. Adjust the phone so that it is straight.

5. Staple the phone cord to the wall if you don't want it to hang freely.

Most Verizon cell phones have a conveniently located mute button.

During a Verizon cell call, you may want to mute the call but still keep the connection alive. The mute feature works a little differently than those on TVs or media players. Instead of making it quiet on your end, it stops transmitting sounds on the other end of the call. This allows you to still hear the caller, but you can speak freely without fear of the caller hearing you. Almost all Verizon phones have this capability conveniently located for quick deployment.

1. Press the "Mute" or "Quiet" button during a call to mute the call. This should be labeled with text or a graphic displaying a speaker or microphone with a line through it. On some Verizon phones, this might be the left soft key or the pound key. Other phones might have this located on a touch screen.

The SIM card also helps your service provider connect your phone to their network.

Instructions

1. Turn the cell phone off. This keeps your important information safe.

2. Turn the phone over and slide the battery cover off. This may take a bit of pressure, but don't force it, as it may damage the cover.

3. Remove the battery and place it aside. You will see the SIM card resting beneath where the battery was. The SIM card looks like a small card with a gold chip on the front. Avoid touching the gold chip.

4. Take the SIM card out of the slot, gently removing any clips that are holing it in place. Turn the card over, and write down the number on the back. This is your SIM card number.

5. Put the SIM card back in its slot gently, and secure it with the metal clips you removed while taking it out.

6. Replace the battery, and slide the battery cover back in place. You can now power up your cell phone again.

Teaching ancient Greek history can be exciting and fun when you incorporate educational crafts into the curriculum. Making Greek musical instruments can be a great way to teach children about how ancient Greeks made them. It's also an innovative way to teach how sound can be created with common household items. All of the items can be found around the house or at a grocery store.

Instructions

1. Make a Greek lyre. Using scissors, cut a hole slightly off-center on the top of an empty shoe box. Make the hole around 3 inches in diameter. Push 12 brass fasteners into the shoe box, placing six on one end and six on the other end. Space the brads out evenly. Cut six rubber bands in half so they become six long rubber band strings. For each rubber band string, tie one end to a brad, then stretch it across the hole, tying the other end to the opposite brad. Cut open an empty toilet paper roll, and slip it underneath one side of the strings, lifting them up slightly. Your Greek lyre is now complete.

2. Make Greek pan pipes. Lay seven plastic drinking straws on a table, making the ends line up evenly. Space them apart so they are 1/2 to 1 inch apart. Place a strip of packing tape across the straws. Flip the straws over, and place another strip of packing tape across the other side, binding it to the first strip of tape. Holding a pair of scissors at an angle, cut across the straws to create a straight, diagonal line. Students can now blow into their very own Greek pan pipes.

3. Make a Greek drum. Cut a piece of waxed paper so it is roughly a 12-inch square. Place the waxed paper across the opening of an empty oatmeal container. Stretch a rubber band across the top of the waxed paper. Gently pull the waxed paper to make it taut. Your Greek drum is now complete.

4. Get your unlocking code from your email and write it down.

7. Enter your unlocking codes. You will see a message on your screen requesting you to enter an unlock code. Type in the unlocking code as you see it and press "OK."

Instructions

1. Plug the headphone into the correct ports. If your headset is a two-jack model, you need to locate the headphone and microphone ports on your computer. The headphone port is normally green while the microphone port is red or pink. These may be located on the front, side or back of your computer case. For the USB model, locate an empty USB port and insert the USB connector.

2. Check your line-in and line-out settings. From the Windows Start menu, open the control panel. Locate the "Sound and audio settings." In Windows 7, this is located under the "Hardware and Sound" heading. Click "Manage audio devices" to go to the settings. Here you can see whether your headset has been properly installed. If it has, it will appear under both the "Playback" and "Recording" tabs.

3. Test your headset. From the audio settings menu, select your headset from the list. Click the "Configure" button to open the test dialog box. Tcpdump and Tcpflow

One of the most common tools for monitoring traffic on a gigabit Ethernet network is known as tcpdump. Tcpdump provides a standard, system-independent interface -- known as libpcap -- for capturing, decoding and filtering packets and, as such, is available for Unix and Windows operating systems. Tcpdump provides a summary of the data on a network at a particular time, but doesn't record the data for future analysis. However, SNMP has some inherent disadvantages, as tools that rely on SNMP are typically restricted to network administrators, and detailed SNMP data is open to misinterpretation by anyone unfamiliar with the configuration of a router or the network as a whole. Unfortunately, some SNMP tools, such as Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) -- which is accessible by non-administrators -- only provide details of traffic load, not traffic type.

Considerations

Recover A Mobile Text Message

Recovering deleted text messages is easy with the right device.

Most of us have at one point or another accidentally deleted a text message. If you would like to recover it, you should know that text messages are not instantly removed from your phone's memory when they are deleted. Rather, they are turned off so as not to be accessible. They are only permanently deleted when the memory slot that the message resides in is overwritten. With the right tools, you can undelete them provided that they haven't been overwritten yet.

Instructions

1. Obtain a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card data recovery kit. A few available are Pro Data Doctor, SIM Card Recovery and SIM Card Spy (see Resources).

2. Remove the SIM card from your phone by detaching your mobile unit's rear housing and taking out the battery, then sliding out the white rectangular memory chip from beneath it.

3. Place the SIM card in the USB reader's designated slot. Plug the device into the USB socket of your laptop or computer and you will receive a prompt saying that it recognizes new hardware.

4. Click on "Have Disk" and insert the CD-Rom that came with your kit. Click "Next" and agree the the "Terms and Agreements" click "Next" again and wait for the drivers and software to install on your computer. Restart it when the installation is complete.

5. Go to the "Start" menu on the computer and select the application that was installed. Once it is open, click on "File," choose "Download Texts," and a window will pop up with all of the messages available on the SIM card. The deleted ones will be marked in red. Find the ones that you wish to undelete and right-click on them and select "Recover Text Message."

Many wireless service providers who support GSM technology have their phones, such as the Nokia 3100, preprogrammed with an unlock code. However, there may be circumstances when mobile phone users wish to use their phone with another provider, such as international travels or if the current service provider does not offer a wireless phone that the mobile user likes. Although there are many sites that suggest it is not possible to connect a PC to a Wii, this is not the case. A Wii to PC USB connection does not require any hacked firmware on the Wii. This will primarily be used on older versions of the console that do not have internal wireless networking hardware. The PC to Wii USB connection requires a special device that allows the console to share Internet access with a personal computer.

1. Install the software included with the device on your Windows computer. The software does not work with the Macintosh or Linux operating systems, although a skilled computer user might be able to get it to work with an Emulator. 2. Connect the Wii to the PC using the WiFi USB connector. Nintendo cautions users that devices not made by Nintendo will not work for this purpose.

3. Turn on the Wii. The computer will not recognize the Nintendo Console until it is plugged in. The computer itself will not recognize the format the Wii uses, although the software installed on the PC gives you limited access to the files saved directly on the console.

4. Start the Wi-FI connection software. This will give the Wii access to the broadband connection through the PC. If you set the WiFi connection software to start up when the computer starts loading Windows, this step is unnecessary.

5. Set up the connection on the Wii. This is done through the Wii startup menu. Go into the Internet Options and select the connection settings. Set up the settings that are appropriate for the setup of your network. This includes WEP encryption and the network name. The Wii should now be able to access the Internet.

Transfer Data From A Nokia 7260 To A 6500

A USB cable can be used to connect mobile phones to computers.

The 7260 and the 6500 are mobile phone devices made by Nokia. With most phones, it is easy to transfer files between two as the majority of phones feature Bluetooth. Unfortunately, the 7260 does not feature Bluetooth, making file transfer a much longer process -- files must be transferred from one phone to a computer, and then from the computer to the other device.

Occasionally, while syncing your BlackBerry, you may get the "0x80040fb3 Error" on it. The 0x80040fb3 Error indicates that there was a problem with synchronizing the Contacts on the BlackBerry, and the error usually causes the Contacts syncing process to hang or stop running. The issue that generates this error is a problem with the way the Contacts are being read by Intellisync, the BlackBerry synchronizing function. The main cause of the error is a problem with syncing contact entries with photos attached. A tertiary cause of the error is having a contact entry with no "Name" data. Sometimes, contact entries will be created with only a phone number or an email address, and no name in the Name field. This problem also generates the 0x80040fb3 error on the BlackBerry.

Instructions

1. Press or tap the "Menu" button on the BlackBerry to show the Home screen.

2. Scroll to and tap the "Address Book" icon to open the Contacts list.

3. Delete or edit each contact with no name in the "Name" field. Make sure all contact entries in the list have Name data.

4. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software on the computer, and plug the BlackBerry into a free port on the computer. The device registers in the desktop manager software.

5. Click the "Synchronize" button to open the "Synchronization" interface.

6. Click the "Synchronization" option in the left navigation panel, and then click the "Synchronization" button in the right pane. The Synchronization Configuration window opens.

7. Click the mail application you use to sync with, and then click "Advanced Options."

8. Uncheck the check box next to "Photo Syncing." If you attach photos to your Contact List on the BlackBerry, this action prevents the photos from syncing with the computer, and therefore prevents the 0x80040fb3 error.

9. Click "OK," and then click "Finish." Click "Synchronize" from the syncing screen in the desktop manager to rerun synchronization. You should not see the 0x80040fb3 error.

My Blackberry Failed To Connect To The Device

It is possible to sync up a BlackBerry to any Bluetooth headset.

BlackBerry smart phones are capable of directly connecting with a wireless Bluetooth headset or other phone, allowing you to directly communicate with the outside device without actually plugging the hardware together. If, however, the BlackBerry is not pairing with the equipment, you do need to perform a few troubleshooting steps to correct the issue causing the failed connection.

Instructions

1. Charge both the BlackBerry and the Bluetooth equipment fully. If the hardware's battery is beginning to drain, the Bluetooth signal may not function correctly, causing the BlackBerry not to pair up with the headset.

2. Power on the Bluetooth device and keep it close to the BlackBerry when syncing -- for example, place it on the same table or hold both pieces of equipment in the same hand. If the Bluetooth hardware is out of range, the cell phone is not going to detect it.

3. Enable the BlackBerry to handle a hands-free device. If you don't, the Bluetooth equipment will not sync with it. Push the "Options" tab on the phone, then choose "Bluetooth." Select "Enable Bluetooth," then "Add Device." The BlackBerry now scans for any available Bluetooth equipment in the area. Once it detects your headset, highlight it and press "OK."

4. Enter in the correct pair code. If you don't, the BlackBerry is unable to sync with the headset. This information is listed in the Bluetooth device's user manual. After choosing "OK" (from the previous step) enter in the correct pair code to completely sync up the equipment.

Change The Text Settings On Nokia Mobile Phones

Accessing text messaging settings on a Nokia phone is a simple procedure. While some options are not able to be changed, some can be customized to the user's preference. Options which do not pertain to any networks, carriers or call centers can be changed at any time.

5. Press "Save Settings" on the bottom of the menu and press "End" on the Nokia to close the menu. The new settings are now changed and saved.

Jabra makes many headsets that are compatible with mobile phones, including cellular phones on the Verizon Wireless network. To pair the Jabra with a Verizon Wireless phone, the phone must have Bluetooth. Bluetooth allows a device to communicate and transfer data with another Bluetooth device without having to be physically connected to it. The instructions for connecting the Jabra with the Verizon phone vary slightly depending upon your phone model. Jabra headset instructions don't vary per model.

Instructions

1. Charge the Jabra Bluetooth headset before attempting to connect it with the Verizon Wireless phone. Insert the tip of the AC adapter into the socket on the Jabra headset. Plug the other end of the adapter into a power outlet. The headset may take two hours to fully charge. The battery indicator light will stay solid green for approximately five minutes when the Jabra is fully charged.

2. Turn on the Verizon Wireless phone's Bluetooth feature. The instructions vary per model. Some phones place the Bluetooth icon on the home screen. Others, such as the Blackberry, require that you select the "Options" menu from the home screen, then the "Bluetooth" menu. Verizon's LG Vortex requires that you press the "Home" key, then the "Applications Launcher" key before choosing "Wireless & Networks" from the "Settings" menu. In the "Wireless & Networks" menu, choose "Bluetooth." When in the "Bluetooth" menu, select the option to turn Bluetooth on.

3. Turn the Jabra headset on by disconnecting it from the AC adapter.

4. Hold down the "Answer/Call" button on the Jabra headset for about five seconds, or until the light flashes blue. This will place the Jabra in pairing mode.

5. Select the option to scan for new devices in the Verizon phone's Bluetooth menu. All available devices in range will be listed.

6. Select the Jabra headset from the list of wireless devices in the Verizon phone.

7. Enter the passkey of "0000," if prompted, in your Verizon phone. The phone is now paired with the Jabra headset.

If you are finding your mobile Skype is not logging onto your account, there are several troubleshooting options available to correct this issue.

1. Open the "Menu" options on your cell phone; then choose the "Wi-Fi" option. You must have the Wi-Fi turned on if you want to use the Skype service. Once activated, the cell phone searches for a nearby Wi-Fi service. Select the network you want to join, type in any required password and press "OK." The Skype service is now going to work properly.

2. Check your username and password. You must make sure you are entering this in properly. If you don't, the Skype service is not going to load onto the phone.

3. Sync your phone back up with the computer and add the Skype application back to your phone. The app may be missing import file information (typically due disconnecting the phone while a sync is still in progress). Once the application is back on the phone, you may now log back onto your account.

4. Move closer to the Wi-Fi source. If you are receiving a weak wireless signal that goes in and out, the Skype service is just going to log you out.

Sony digital cameras allow you to use them as webcam in addition to all the other features. Just like other webcams, you can use your camera to video chat with family and friends on instant messaging programs (e.g., Yahoo!) as well as create short videos using video editing software. You can begin using your Sony digital camera as a webcam quickly once you complete a few very simple setup steps.

Instructions

1. Connect one end of the video cable into the "Video Out" jack on your Sony camera. Plug the other end into the "Video In" jack on your computer. The video jack is yellow and can generally be found on the back of the computer.

2. Place the camera on top of the monitor or in a secure location at eye level. Turn the mode dial on the camera to "Camera Mode" and turn on the camera. The camera automatically begins streaming video.

3. Launch your webcam application, such as an instant messenger program, and begin using the camera as a webcam. Adjust the camera to make sure that it is focused on you.
